Black pendant light above a dining table

Wall and pendant lights: what to know before fitting

, by Kezaro, 2 min reading time

The right height, distance from the table, connection and a qualified electrician: the key points before your new light goes on the wall or ceiling.

A wall or pendant light usually stays in the same place for years. A little planning beforehand makes sure it looks exactly the way you imagine.

1. Plug-in or hardwired?

Every Kezaro product page shows under “Fitting” how the light is connected. Most wall, ceiling and pendant lights are hardwired to the mains. For that you need an existing connection point in the right place.

Our recommendation: have hardwired lights fitted by a qualified electrician. It is usually quick, it is safe, and it protects you if there is ever a warranty or insurance question.

2. The right height for wall lights

As a guide:

  • Living room and hallway: around 160 to 180 cm above the floor, measured to the centre of the light.
  • Beside the bed: so that the light falls on your book when reading and not in your eyes, often around 30 to 50 cm above the mattress.
  • Above a sideboard or picture: centred above it, with a little space above the top edge.

Tip: before drilling, stick a piece of masking tape the size of the light on the wall and live with it for a day or two.

3. Pendant lights above the dining table

  • Distance to the tabletop: as a guide, around 60 to 75 cm. The light will not dazzle you and you can still see each other.
  • Width: the light should sit comfortably within the table area. Above long tables, linear designs or several pendants side by side look calmer.
  • Centred: if the ceiling connection is not above the table, an electrician can hang the light off-centre.

4. A quick check before you order

  • Where is the connection point, and does the light suit that spot?
  • Does the size suit the wall or table? The dimensions are under “Product details”.
  • Is a bulb included? That is on the product page too.
  • Which colour temperature suits the room? Read more in Which colour temperature suits which room?
